Definition

An aquifer is an underground overlay of permeable rock, sediment or soil that contains water and allows it to flow through. Aquifers are vital sources of groundwater, supplying water for wells, springs and other water sources. They play a crucial role in providing water for human consumption, agriculture and various industrial activities.

Key Benefits

Aquifers are a critical overlay for understanding and managing groundwater resources. This spatial data informs decision-making processes related to land use planning, water allocation and environmental protection measures.

Tips:

  • This overlay is labeled Principle Aquifers Overlay, except if you're in Texas which has Major and Minor Aquifer Overlays available.
  • Click on a highlighted Aquifer Overlay to see the pop-up that includes the name of the aquifer.

Limitations:  This overlay should be used for reference only. Users should be cautious of potential temporal lags in updates, omissions and positional precision errors.

Coverage

  • Contiguous United States (exclude Hawaii and Alaska)
  • Since Texas is its own country, you'll see Major Aquifer and Minor Aquifer Overlays instead of a single Principle Aquifers Overlay.
